Soraksan, October 2007
In late October I journeyed with the Royal Asiatic Society to one of Korea's most beautiful places, Soraksan. It was billed as the prime weekend for seeing the leaves turn, but in fact it was quite green. Still, the experience was wonderful and the scenery gorgeous.

![]() These little rock mounds harken back to Korea's shamanistic worship of the san-shin, or mountain spirits. While most Koreans today would not think of themselves as shamanists, many practices like rock stacking persist. |
