Everything I Love Goes Away

It seems like every time I really get into a TV show, it gets the ax.  Arrested Development is the prototypical example, of course; everyone cites the Bluth family when they lament the smart shows that end too early. I'm still lamenting the early death of Life on Mars, and now I hear that Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show is not coming back.  Pushing Daisies bit the dust before that.  Kings, which is enjoyable but not necessarily my favorite, is being booted to the summer and almost certainly the graveyard.  Dollhouse isn't likely to survive, but I only watch that out of loyalty to the guy who gave the world Dr. Horrible.
Here's hoping Futurama finds a way back on air.

Tax Breaks for Paying Cash in Korea

If you've ever been shopping in Korea, you've seen this sticker on a cash register.  Every registered retailer in sunny Daehan Minguk should have this in fact.  The cash receipt allows you to get a rebate on the value added tax charged on all product sales.  As foreigners, though, it is a bit challenging to take advantage of this system. It is possible, and this article from Joongang Daily tells you how.  It is likely, however, that your alien ID number isn't registered properly, which means you'll need to head over to Ye Old Gu Tax Office with your best Korean buddy and get registered in the tax system.

Chinese People Need to Be Controlled?

At a conference in Boao, China, martial arts star Jackie Chan said that he is not sure if Chinese people can handle freedom.I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not. I'm really confused now. If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic."

Reaping What You Sow

Glenn Greenwald has noticed that the Right has suddenly rediscovered their fear of the big, bad federal government, but only after giving that government the most sweeping powers in American history.  The impetus, or at least this whiny bout's impetus, is the release of a report begun a year ago under the Bush DoJ about the increased danger posed by Right-wing, single-interest groups, i.e. domestic terrorists.  As Greenwald points out, the Right's punditry have poor memories.  Claiming that there would have been no such targeting of one side's radicals, one pundit lnked a Washington Post article that actually mentions a Bush-era DoJ report on 'left-wing extremists'.

McCain Disses Palin

When listing the young stars of the Republican party, McCain either purposefully or accidentally forgot to mention his dear ol' running mate.  Either way, it's a pretty harsh snub.  Click here to watch.

I went for a walk around Dalmasa, a temple near my house, and they've put up their lanterns for Buddha's Birthday.  The gallery is here.

Inspiration

"North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is reportedly a big film buff, and his strategy appears to have borrowed heavily from the 1959 movie "The Mouse That Roared," about a fictional poor country that declares war on the U.S. expecting to lose and get aid like the Marshall Plan that Washington used to help rebuild its World War II foes."
